Top 5 Things to Avoid While Breastfeeding
As we all worry about what we can and cannot have while breastfeeding, it's important to note that most things can be consumed, but in moderation. Here is a quick reference of things that should be minimized in your diet while you are nursing.
- Fish high in mercury! Avoid fish high in mercury like swordfish, and swap it for a fish with less mercury (like salmon). You should minimize your fish intake to no more than twice a week to help minimize the amount of mercury you're consuming while breastfeeding.
- Caffeine- Again, you do not need to eliminate it completely. If you are a coffee fanatic, by all means have your morning coffee! It's important to note that caffeine can pass into your breastmilk, so moderation is key to help prevent your little one from getting the jitters. It's recommended to have your caffeine treat after your nursing session.
- Alcohol- Same principle as caffeine in that alcohol can also transfer into your breastmilk. That being said, if you've had enough to where you are feeling the effects yourself, it is best not to breastfeed at that time.
- Sage and peppermint- Minimize these as they are known to have a negative effect on your milk supply. I have read the same about parsley as well.
- Be mindful of Supplements- It is important to be aware that many of the supplements we take are not FDA approved. Be conscious of everything that is inside of them.
The Key
Keeping a well-balanced diet while breastfeeding is the key. As per usual, it is smart to steer clear from highly processed foods because you need to nourish your body with healthy, nutrient-dense foods in order to best nourish your baby. Be aware of anything that sets your baby off, as some babies hate strong flavors like garlic or spice. Also be aware of any reoccurring sensitivities your baby may have, noting if they become increasingly gassy, irritable, or uncomfortable after a feeding. This could potentially indicate an allergy or reaction to dairy or other food product you recently ingested.
Again, feel free to have your morning coffee. Indulge in a hard-earned glass of wine. All is well in moderation. Congratulations on the birth of your baby and for stepping into your breastfeeding journey!
